§1What girly flash usually means
Flash is a design the artist drew in advance, which you pick and get tattooed more or less as it is. Our guide to flash tattoos covers the rest.
Girly flash is a search phrase, not the name of a style. Several subjects in this set go back a long way: swallows, hearts and roses all appear on Wikipedia’s list of old school American traditional designs, alongside eagles and panthers. Here that means FW-09 Pair of swallows and R-01 Single rose with stem, with BF-01 Traditional butterfly and FW-10 Traditional cherries drawn the same way: a black outline and a few flat colors. HT-01 Heart with banner and R-10 Rose and banner leave the banner blank, so your artist can letter in a name or a word.
§2Flash for women by style
- Traditional: FW-09, FW-10, FW-11 Hamsa with evil eye, HT-01, R-01, BF-01, AN-13 Dove with olive branch and banner and CT-05 Cat with a rose.
- Neo-traditional: FW-03 Snake and peonies, CT-12 Cat head with peonies, TG-09 Tiger head with peonies, FL-07 Neo-traditional peony and SH-09 Shark with hibiscus.
- Japanese: R-11 Japanese rose, FL-06 Cherry blossom branch, BF-05 Japanese butterfly and SP-09 Web with cherry blossoms.
- Fine line in color: FW-01 Crescent moon on a wildflower stem, FW-02 Sun and moon, FW-06 Hummingbird and flower and FW-07 Tiny dragonfly. Thin lines leave only small patches for color, so judge these at their default size or larger.
Before you print a shortlist, check the usual size for your spot in the size and placement chart.
§3Swallows and the hamsa
Swallows come with a sailor’s story: one bird for 5,000 nautical miles at sea, a second for 10,000, the pair often tattooed facing each other on the chest. The retellings don’t agree. A tattooer quoted in 1985 told the same story about bluebirds, and other accounts tie the swallow to coming home safely, since the birds return to the same places every year. FW-09 keeps the old layout, two swallows flying toward each other, and the chest is one of its placements.
The hamsa is an open-hand amulet meant to ward off the evil eye, and an eye is often drawn in the palm. Jews and Muslims in Arab countries both used it. Muslims may call it the Hand of Fatima, and it has also been called the Hand of Miriam. FW-11 follows that version in a heavy traditional outline.
Swallow lore per the Friends of HMS Trincomalee and Wikipedia on sailor tattoos and the barn swallow. The hamsa per ReformJudaism.org and Chabad.org.
§4Questions
Q1What are cute small flash tattoos for women?
Try FW-10 Traditional cherries, FT-03 Cute ghost, CT-10 Peeking cat, DG-09 Paw print in a heart or HT-11 Simple heart outline. Each prints at 2 inches or under by default and fits a wrist or an ankle.
Q2Which flash suits a first tattoo?
A bold traditional piece with a few colors, such as R-01 Single rose with stem, HT-01 Heart with banner, BF-01 Traditional butterfly or FW-11 Hamsa with evil eye, at 3 to 3.5 inches. Bring the print to the consultation so your artist sees the colors you have in mind.
Q3What does a swallow tattoo mean?
For sailors it marked distance covered at sea, and it came to stand for a safe return home. The stories differ in the details, so the meaning is the one you give it.
Q4Can I add a name to the heart or rose banner?
Yes, that is why the banners on HT-01 Heart with banner and R-10 Rose and banner are blank. Lettering is not part of the print, so ask your artist to write the name or word in.
