§1Choosing a flower other than a rose
Twelve of the designs here are roses, R-01 to R-12. Their meaning and sizes are covered on the rose stencils page, so this page is about the rest of the garden.
The lotus roots in mud and opens clean above the water, which is why Buddhist texts use it as an image of purity. FL-02 Lotus on water is a bold traditional version with few lines. FL-09 Lotus mandala turns the same flower into a symmetric geometric piece for the chest or back.
Several flowers here come from Japanese tattooing. Cherry blossoms drop soon after they open, and in Japan they stand for how short life is. FL-06 Cherry blossom branch runs on a diagonal that follows a forearm or a sleeve; SP-09 Web with cherry blossoms catches the petals in a spider web. The chrysanthemum is the crest of the Japanese imperial family, and FL-05 Japanese chrysanthemum has wind bars sweeping behind it, so give it a back or a thigh. The peony (botan) is a classic of Japanese tattooing; FL-07 draws it neo-traditional, with curling leaves.
Lilies go two ways. FL-10 Wilted lily and moon is a gothic piece: a fading flower is an old memento mori, a reminder that life ends. FL-11 Chicano calla lilies ties three stems with a ribbon, and the calla is the flower Diego Rivera painted again and again in his flower vendors. For shapes that still read small, FL-01 Traditional sunflower and FL-08 Bold blackwork tulip are the two bold, few-line flowers here, and FL-04 Tiny daisy is the smallest.
§2Flower sizes by placement
| Placement | Usual size | Good designs |
|---|---|---|
| Wrist | 1–3 in | FL-04 Tiny daisy, FL-12 Five-petal flower, CR-04 |
| Ankle | 1–3 in | FL-04, FL-08, CR-04, R-03 |
| Neck | 2–4 in | FL-04, R-09 |
| Forearm | 3–6 in | FL-01, FL-02, FL-07, FL-11, BF-11 |
| Calf | 2–6 in | BF-11 Butterfly on a flower, FL-03 Wildflower bouquet, FL-08 |
| Chest | 3–10 in | FL-09, FL-07, FL-05 |
| Back | 4–10 in | FL-05, FL-06, HT-12, SP-09 |
| Thigh | 4–10 in | FL-10, FL-05, SP-09 |
The ranges follow the size charts at Saved Tattoo and Inkjin and are a starting point, not a rule. Fine-line petals need more room than a bold outline of the same flower. FL-06 and HT-12 are drawn tall for a sleeve; if a design is bigger than your paper, the PDF splits it across sheets you tape together.
§3Stencil, outline or flash
Every flower here prints three ways. The stencil is mirrored for transfer paper. The outline is the same drawing the right way around, for tracing or for practice lining on synthetic skin. The flash sheet is filled with color and shows how the petals and leaves break into color areas, which helps if you haven’t settled on a palette yet. Take it to the consultation.
§4Questions
Q1Which flower stencil is easiest for a first tattoo?
FL-12 Five-petal flower is a forget-me-not drawn with very few lines, made for practice. FL-04 Tiny daisy and FL-03 Wildflower bouquet are also simple, and FL-01 and FL-02 are bold traditional pieces rated for beginners.
Q2Do you have hibiscus or violet stencils?
Not in this set. For a small five-petal outline, FL-12 is the closest shape. For lilies, see FL-10 and FL-11.
Q3How big should a cherry blossom tattoo be?
FL-06 is a long diagonal branch, 7 in by default. On a forearm keep it at 6 in or less; the back, thigh and a sleeve take it larger.
Q4Is there a peony tattoo stencil?
Yes, FL-07 Neo-traditional peony, 5 in by default, drawn for a forearm, thigh or chest. If you want the Japanese look instead, R-11 Japanese rose is drawn botan-style, with the layered petals of a peony.
