§1What a rose tattoo means

The rose is one of the oldest motifs in Western tattooing. Most people pick it for love, for someone they lost, or for the pairing of a soft flower with thorns. A red rose on a flash sheet usually reads as love; a rose with a date, a clock or a banner is often a memorial piece.

None of this is fixed. The meaning is whatever you bring to it, and your artist won’t ask you to justify it.

§2Rose sizes by placement

Chest3–8 in +R-06, R-07, R-11
Thigh, back4–10 in; a full back 10–15 inR-08 Vine wrap, R-11, R-07

Ranges are a starting point, taken from published size charts by Saved Tattoo and Inkjin. The same size looks big on a wrist and small on a thigh, and fine detail needs more room than bold lines.

§3Getting the stencil onto skin

Print the stencil format on thermal or inkjet stencil paper, mirrored. Clean and shave the area, apply a stencil solution, press the sheet down for a few seconds and peel it off in one motion. Let it dry before tattooing.

§4Questions

Q1Can I use these stencils for free?

Yes. They are free for personal use, and an artist can use a design from here to tattoo a client. Please don’t resell the files or print them on merchandise. The full terms are on the terms page.

Q2Why is the stencil mirrored?

A transfer is applied face down, which flips the image. Printing the stencil mirrored means it reads the right way round on skin. Outlines and flash print as drawn, and you can switch Mirror off if your method doesn’t flip.

Q3How do I print at the exact size?

Set the size, download the PDF and print at 100% or “Actual size”, with “Fit to page” turned off. Then measure the 1 inch test square. If it isn’t 1 inch, your printer scaled the page.

Q4Are these designs AI-generated?

Yes. Each drawing starts as an AI-generated image. The stencilfolio editors choose the usable ones, clean up the lines and check that each file prints at the size you set. Every file is labeled as AI-generated in its metadata. More on the about page.
