§1What a shark tattoo means

A shark tattoo has no fixed meaning. A Friends of HMS Trincomalee booklet on sailors’ tattoos says a shark meant the sailor took on the “rough characteristics” of the animal, but cites no source.

  • SH-11 Shark and anchor adds a second sea symbol: the US Naval History and Heritage Command says an anchor originally marked a sailor who had crossed the Atlantic.
  • Some Hawaiian families hold that an ancestral guardian, an ʻaumakua, can appear as a shark (manō). The bond belongs to the family, not to sharks in general, so a design doesn’t carry it on its own.
  • SH-07 Whale shark shows the largest fish alive today, a filter feeder whose pattern of spots is unique to each animal.

§2Choosing a shark stencil or outline

For a simple shark outline, start with SH-01 Simple shark outline, a side-view shark in a few clean lines. SH-06 Tiny shark, fine line and SH-12 Shark fin above a wave are smaller and also fit a hand. Fine lines blur first on a weak print, so check the printed SH-06 stencil before you transfer it.

For a great white shark outline, take SH-02 Great white shark, a side view with the mouth open. For a shark jaw stencil, SH-05 Shark jaw is the bare jaw in heavy blackwork, and SH-03 Traditional shark jaws is a whole shark coming at you head-on. The teeth are the finest detail in both, so keep either at 3.5 in or larger.

For traditional shark flash, look at SH-01, SH-03, SH-11 and SH-12: black outlines and only a few colors, like the red mouth on SH-03 and the gold rope looped around the anchor on SH-11. SH-08 Japanese shark leaping from waves sets the shark in breaking waves, one of the usual backgrounds in Japanese tattooing. SH-07 Whale shark, SH-09 Shark with hibiscus and SH-10 Geometric shark carry more detail; give them 4.5 to 5 in.

There is no hammerhead here. The stencil maker turns your own drawing, or a photo you have the rights to, into a stencil.

Size ranges are from the placement charts at Saved Tattoo and Inkjin. The size you set is the longest side of the drawing, and most of these sharks are wider than they are tall, so a 5 in great white runs along the arm.

§4Questions

Q1What does a shark tattoo mean?

There is no fixed meaning. A naval heritage booklet says a sailor’s shark stood for the animal’s rough character, and some Hawaiian families hold that an ancestral guardian, or ʻaumakua, can appear as a shark. A shark you pick because you like sharks needs no other reason.

Q2Is there a hammerhead shark tattoo stencil?

Not in this set. To make one from your own drawing or a photo you have the rights to, use the stencil maker. It works in your browser without uploading the image, and the stencil prints at real size like the designs here.

Q3Which shark outline is simplest to tattoo?

SH-12 Shark fin above a wave, SH-06 Tiny shark, fine line and SH-01 Simple shark outline are rated simple. SH-12 is a fin over a few wavy lines at 1.75 in, while SH-01 gives you the whole shark in a few lines at 3 in.

Q4Is there traditional shark tattoo flash?

Yes. SH-01, SH-03, SH-11 and SH-12 are drawn in the American traditional manner, and each comes as a flash version in a few colors. SH-03 Traditional shark jaws, for example, is a cream shark with a red mouth. Download it as a PDF or PNG at the size you set.

Q5What size should a whale shark tattoo be?

SH-07 Whale shark is set at 5 in by default and drawn for the forearm, calf, thigh or back. The spots are what make it a whale shark, so if you scale it down for a narrow forearm, check that they still read as separate dots.
